I visited Lyon some time mid-December. It was cloudy, rainy and foggy (as you can see in the pictures) and it was quite challenging to walk around. I went out with a couple of my colleagues from the flight that we operated together, maybe 3-4 other girls and I remember umbrellas and huge winter coats bumping into each other while walking. Nevertheless, we did manage to grasp a good overview of the city. Our layover was 24 hours starting from the time of landing the previous evening. Overall we had between 3 and 4 hours to look around before heading back to the hotel for a much needed sleep before the way back.
Lyon is the second largest city in France, situated 470km south of Paris. It is historical, in fact it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and there is an old town center full of typical European traditional architecture – something between Renaissance and Gothic buildings. There is also Ancient Lyon – a settlement dating back to Roman times and built on Fourviere Hill. Nowadays, if you climb up there you can see The Roman Theater and have a good view of the city, if the weather is clear. You can visit Lyon’s cathedral there and enjoy some more views.
The city center is relatively small or at least smaller compared to other cities. Even so, there is a lot to see and do. I noticed that there are lots of small shops and galleries. And when I say a lot I mean it, they are literary at every corner. You can find a huge variety of handmade arts and crafts by local designers – jewelry, home décor, paintings, souvenirs, clothes. All little shops and studios are located in the historical center, following steep narrow streets. Also, it is full of cute little cafes decorated in just the same arty style.
Depending on where you are staying, access to the city is easy – there is a very well developed public transportation system, including a subway and trams. The subway might be a bit confusing at first but the locals are very helpful and keen to give directions.
All and all that sums up my impressions of Lyon. The city is beautiful and has a lot of activities to offer but I do recommend having more than 4 hours to spend there and preferably visit when it is not pouring rain!
