I am not sure how many of you are familiar with the place I am writing about-Brugge, a small Belgian town which somehow has lost part of its glamour and charm in the recent years but, luckily for us, the tourists, it is re-gaining its glow and popularity. Brugge is romantic (girls if you have a boyfriend you adore this is the place!), colorful, busy and lively but at the same time you get stunned by its slow and calm pace, people riding bicycles (bikes, in fact, are more than cars), drinking wine in the squares or simply enjoying a walk along the river. The ladies are classy and elegant and the gentlemen are tall and handsome - Brugge brings you back some centuries ago and this is what one likes about it. The lifestyle stands out with its relaxed character, shop windows full of chocolate in the most amazing and unusual forms and combinations and says ‘Buy me!’ Brugge reminds of Venice with its bridges and canals where you can go punting or Prague with its fairy-tail beauty and romanticism. If you are in a mood for a good ‘look-around’ hire a carriage driven by a beautiful lady dressed in a traditional riding outfit. Do not forget to drink coffee at ‘The chocolate corner’ or visit 2
Kathe Wohlfahrt - this is something like Santa’s workshop where it is Christmas throughout the whole year without break. Small paved streets, flowers, thrilling old buildings. Brugge is a place where you go and simply enjoy life as it is…
Brugge, in fact, is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. Those of us studying politics know that Belgium is famous for its versatile structure of the population and the abundance of languages. The citizens’ mother tongue is Flemish but they also speak Dutch, German, French (because of the closeness with the border) and fluent English. The city was active economic and market centre because of its canals. Today it is more a tourist attraction with its medieval aura than important trade centre.
Church of Our Lady is one of the ‘must see’ in Brugge. A brick spire, one of the highest in the world. Like everything else there even the name catches your attention with mystery J. Another sight not to miss is the sculpture Madonna and Child is believed to be Michelangelo’s only sculpture to have left in Italy within his lifetime. Do not forget the Town Hall which will astonish you with its detailed façade.
