Updated: Jun 20, 2023

Standing proud above London, the four high chimneys of Battersea Power Station certainly don't go unnoticed by any visitor of the British capital and it's one of the best city break tips for travellers in London. The majestic construction, once built to provide the city's electricity needs, has played various roles throughout the decades - from a power station in the early 20th century to a pop culture symbol, this emblem of industrial London is now a popular shopping and entertainment center and one of London't latest fanciest and newly emerging neighbourhoods.

Located on the south bank of River Thames, Battersea was first constructed in the 1930s with the intention to meet the electricity needs of the fast growing London population at the time. It is one of the world's largest brick buildings and is well known for its Art Deco interior and decor.

Battersea has been a regular occurrence in popular culture, having being featured in various films, television programmes, music videos and video games. Undoubtedly, its most significant and memorable appearance is on the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 album - Animals - which sold millions of copies worldwide and remains an image largely connected to Pink Floyd until today.

After years during which the station remained mostly in ruins, today Battersea is turned into a fancy shopping mall, being a home to some of the world's best brands and offers various culinary delights. Even so, its vintage architecture and taste have been greatly preserved, carrying the spirit of the '30s.

The highlight of any visit at Battersea Power Station is the view from above, looking down the entire city thanks to a built-in futuristic lift in one of the chimneys. Named "Lift 109", this epic glass construction takes you up to 109 meters in the London skyline.

"Lift 109" is a must-experience attraction at Battersea. The journey commences at the impressive Art Deco Turbine Hall. The old integrity of the hall has been kept, skillfully combined with modern media displays, contemporary art installations and curated ensemble of original records. Before going up the lift you can dive into the building's long and rich history and learn more about how it was transformed throughout time.

As you move upwards along the chimney, a constellation of a light guide paves the way of the circular glass lift climbing up to the 109th meter. Look up to enjoy the lights and the ascend itself as you gradually move towards a landscape like no other.

Once you reach the top, you will be able to enjoy a magnificent 360-degree view of London. It's better to opt for the lift on a clear, bright and sunny day to avoid the possibility of fogs hindering the landscape.
