Edinburgh - A Medieval Walk

Updated: Jun 20, 2023

Edinburgh…the city that inspired Harry Potter and a country that inspired Outlander…Edinburgh truly takes you to a journey to times long gone by…

Edinburgh is one of my favorite destinations and it is considered one of the most picturesque cities in the world. Small and cosy and yet exciting, it is a place that has fully preserved its medieval spirit and looks the same as it looked several hundred years ago.

The medieval walk in Edinburgh usually starts from Edinburgh Castle. Even if you are staying at an airport hotel, there is a very easy transport to the center. You can reach it by direct bus and the last stop where you get off is Waverley Bridge. The bridge connects Market Street in the Old Town with Princess Street in New Town.

Edinburgh Castle

After getting off at Waverley (there is also the main train station), I advise you to head to Edinburgh Castle. It is located up a hill at the heart of Scotland’s capital city and reveals an exciting view over the city. The Castle hosts Scotland’s history, military one including. Some of the best places to explore there are The Great Hall, Prisons of War and the Regimental Museums. The whole Castle is a representation of Scotland’s history and way of life through the ages. It has been used as a military fortress, royal residence and a prison of war. Do not forget to spend some time outside and enjoy a spectacular view over the whole city.

The Royal Mile

After the Castle go straight down the hill along the Royal Mile. It is a perfectly preserved historical street that has retained its architecture from Medieval times. Along the way you can enjoy many cute little shops and workshops full of traditional Scottish souvenirs, landmarks, arts and crafts.

The most impressive thing about the Royal Mile is its architecture. The street consists of perfectly preserved medieval buildings whose details and building elements are exactly as they were when there were first constructed. Even the frames of the windows are the same as a couple of hundred years ago it is forbidden by law to change them!

While you are walking this lovely street, make a stop at St Giles’ Cathedral. The church plays an important role in the cultural life of the city and hosts a wide variety of concerts, lectures and exhibitions.

And more…

Truth is, Edinburgh is amazing! It is authentic, beautiful and cosy and you can get lost in the curly maze of narrow steep streets. There is something magical about the city and it is no wonder that it has inspired world famous Harry Potter sequence and historical yet fantasy drama Outlander.

The city also has a lot of entertainment to offer. This is where Edinburgh University is located and the Scottish capital bustles with students, culture and academic life. The nightlife is lively and versatile and there are plenty of options for roaming around all kinds of restaurants, pubs, clubs and bars. There is plenty of live music, exhibitions, concerts and spontaneous get togethers!
