The aviation industry is slowly starting to recover from the global pandemic and I thought it would be a good idea to share a few tips of how you can become cabin crew and Emirates cabin crew as this is the company I am mostly familiar with. Some airlines are starting to rehire their staff that lost their jobs due to COVID-19. Soon enough, the industry will see a surge in the hiring of completely new staff as travel demand is starting to pick up.
DO YOU REALLY WANT TO DO THIS?
Before you even begin making your research for potential airlines to apply to and their requirements, ask yourself the questions “Do I really want to this?” and “Why do I want to be cabin crew”? Is it because of love for traveling? Meeting people from all over? Seeing the world? Saving some good money? Getting international work experience? The list goes on and on, but you need to understand why you want to do this and make your choice consciously. The realities of being cabin crew are not only fancy hotels and exotic destinations but lots of hard work, dealing with hundreds of people on daily basis, sleepless nights, unsociable shifts, constant change of time zones. And the list goes on…so before you apply you need to understand that this is not an easy job.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
The next step is to do your research and find out the exact requirements your chosen airline has for their potential flight attendants. E.g., age, height, education, previous experience – the airlines usually have these clearly outlined on their websites. Find out if they require an online application first, before going to actual interviews and assessments. If you haven’t chosen an airline, decide what kind of an airline you are looking for – domestic, international, one offering layovers or one without. Not all airlines in the world offer the option of staying overnight at destinations.
READ, READ AND READ
After you have figured out the above, start reading about the airline. See what you will be able to find online (outside their official website) regarding the application process, the way you should look at the interview, people’s impressions, testimonials from current staff. Watch YouTube videos - there are many vloggers who post videos from the job itself and provide some pretty good insights how things look for real. Just stay away from the overly negative ones – some people make everything look way worse than it actually is.
GET YOUR QUALIFICATIONS IN ORDER
As mentioned, figure out in details what exactly your chosen airline requires. In case you think you are missing a qualification that is required, go get it first before submitting your documents. Is your English rusty? Sign up for a refresher course! Do you need customer service experience? Maybe get a job for a year that will provide you some skills in the field. Confidence plays a big part in a successful application for a cabin crew job and before your go for it, make sure you have done everything in your power to get your confidence and professional skills at their best possible shape.
REMAIN FOCUSED
I am not going to spice things up – sometimes candidates do not get the job from the first time. Many crew I have met were hired after their second, even third trial. It is a very competitive field with lots of candidates and sometimes you may be good but, on that day, there was a better candidate. Do not give up even if it does not work out the first time – try again and see what you can improve until the next round of applications.
That’s pretty much it. Please, bear in mind that these are general suggestions that may be of help but in no way guarantee that your application will be successful.
Good luck! :)
