Sky blue water, sandy beaches, infinite horizons….welcome to Mauritius Island…

It is no coincidence that I titled this piece Heaven on Earth. For me Mauritius Island is one of the best places on the planet - mesmerizing beauty, endless seas and everlasting exotic greenery that capture your eyes.

We landed in Mauritius after a 6-hour busy night flight full of holiday makers, looking forward to spend probably one of the best times of their lives on this piece of paradise. Tired and lacking sleep but happy and content of going to this mini holiday ourselves, we disembarked the aircraft and headed to the island.

The first thing you feel when you land in Mauritius Island for the first time is the humidity. Although, not as strong as in Asia, India or parts of South America, it is still there and the heat is the first sign that you have properly arrived. Together with it, the air smells of flowers, salty seas and exotic plants and fruit. And before you can feel this air there is no way to properly describe the loveliness and peacefulness of Mauritius.

The resort we stayed in is very close to the airport, - Shandrani Resort and Spa - is around 15 minutes away. And don’t get me wrong – the fact that it is close to the airport does not make it any less attractive. The first thing you see is a huge and open welcoming reception area constructed of wood and natural materials and overlooking the pool, the main restaurant and green alleys leading to the rooms. Once you check in, you head to your room. The rooms are actually inside three-story holiday houses. Each room is very light and spacious, with a double bed and a bathroom integrated into the room itself and a balcony. The entire resort, including the hotel houses, is built in a park – a gorgeous labyrinth of green alleys full of palm trees and flowers. You can easily go out and take a walk and inhale real Mauritius air.

As tired as I was, once I saw the scenery I could barely force myself to get some sleep. Shortly after arrival I could not help myself but rush to lunch – an open buffet in the resort’s main restaurant offering all kinds of traditional and more general food options. My advice to you is to go for sea food and salads. They are prepared according to traditional Mauritius recipes. And let’s be honest – no one goes there to eat pizza or burgers! The restaurant is open, with a traditional pointy roof made of wood and bamboo and you have a view of the pool and the beach.

After lunch I headed straight to the beach where I was met by marvelous blue water. The water was so clear that I could see the sand without any problems. The beach is surrounded by palm trees and has a slight breeze which makes the heat a little bit more bearable. After that I took a dip at the pool. By the way, both the beach and the pool were so gorgeous that I had a tough time deciding where to spend more time.

Apart from this, the resort offers all kinds of water entertainment-snorkeling, diving, a boat trip, and sailing. You can rent the entire equipment there. I would say decide in advance what exactly you want to do because it is too tempting to actually do everything.

After my beach and pool sessions I headed for a walk around the resort and for planning some evening entertainment about which you can read in my next post!
