What to do in Budapest

One of the pearls of Europe – Budapest – is one of those capitals where you can feel the spirit of Europe at its best. Culture, art, fashion, finance, education and entertainment abound from its historic corners and wait to be discovered again and again. Keep on reading to find out more on what to do in Budapest!

I have visited the city twice – by myself when I was around 18 years old and once as a flight attendant at 27. I have to say the city had not lost any of its charms for 8 years. To the contrary, it seemed even younger, faster and more cultural than I remembered. Budapest attracts many young people to its curvy streets due to its lively party scene, relatively low prices and spectacular views. I highly recommend staying at one of the hotels by Danube River. There is nothing more romantic than an evening with shimmering city lights, moonlit river and an overview of Budapest’s iconic bridges.

The city offers infinite opportunities for sightseeing and you can choose from different kinds of tours-by bus, boat and on foot. Personally, I have always preferred walking wherever possible. This is the best way to dive into the place and feel it living and breathing.

An absolute must see in Budapest is The Parliament. The building is impressive. Budapest is recognized also as an architectural jewel and the Parliament building in Gothic style proves it. Other sights that you should not miss are Heroes’ Square, St Stephen’s Basilica and Buda Castle Hill Funicular (the view from there is spectacular and it is probably the best spot for pictures). If you have time go to Szechenye Thermal Baths to take a dip. The waters are rich in sulphates, calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate and fluoride that make them healthy and healing.

What I mostly love about Budapest is its vintage and slightly old, even antique-ish atmosphere. Hungarians have managed to preserve the unique historical and authentic spirit of their capital and modern, cold and glassy constructions are a rare sight, at least in the center.

If you are wandering when would be the best time to visit I would say summer (as usual) and Christmas. Last time I was there was late November. The Christmas lights were already lit and the markets opened.

Travel tip: go visit Café Gerbeaud if you are into 1858 dining! I have to admit it is still on my To Do list.
